<p>The Tramway Gas Station is a landmark former Enco service station in Palm Springs, California, United States, so named because of its location at the foot of Tramway Road, the lone road leading to the base of the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. It was intended to be the first Palm Springs building visitors saw when approaching the city from the north via California State Route 111.</p><br>
<p>The building, with its distinctive, cantilevered, wedge-shaped canopy (referred to as a hyperbolic paraboloid on a historic marker mounted on the building), was built in 1965 and was designed by Albert Frey and Robson C. Chambers. It is considered to be a prime example of modernist architecture.</p><br>
<p>The station had closed by the mid-1990s, and its fate was in doubt until its purchase by a private interest, who erected a wall around the property and converted it into an art gallery. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2015. It is now operated by the Palm Springs Bureau of Tourism as the Palm Springs Visitor Center.</p><br>
<p>Alvarado Park Lake is a reservoir in Johnson County, Texas 2 mi southwest of Alvarado, Texas.</p><br>
<p>The county-owned reservoir was built in 1966 by Jack P. McKinney for floodwater retention, municipal water storage, and recreation.</p><br>
<p>It is controlled by the City of Alvarado.</p><br>
<p>The lake is formed by damming the Turkey Creek, a tributary of Chambers Creek and the Trinity River.</p><br>
<p>It drains 31 square miles and is impounded by a 3,500 ft dam 49 ft high with a spillway level of 704.1 ft.</p><br>
<p>The water is stained to murky due to sediment.</p><br>
<p>The nearest major highways are I-35W and US Hwy 67, each approximately 3 mi from the lake.</p><br>

<p>A public boat ramp is located on the north side of the lake as well as a private residential boat ramp on the southeast side.</p><br>
<p>The Greaser Petroglyph Site is located on land owned by the Bureau of Land Management in eastern Lake County, Oregon. The designs were scraped into a basalt boulder by Native Americans perhaps 12,000 years ago. No one knows the meaning of the designs. Because of its unique archaeological and cultural significance, the Greaser Petroglyph Site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.</p><br>
<h2>Prehistoric art</h2><br>
<p>Native Americans have lived in southeastern Oregon for at least 15,000 years, according to a 2012 find in the Paisley Caves. At that time, pluvial lakes filled many of the high desert basins. Little is known about the people who occupied the land at that time, except that they camped and hunted near the lakes. The earliest petroglyphs in southeastern Oregon may be as much as 15,000 years old or much older.</p><br>
<p>In 1840, when the first white men came through southern Oregon, the Fort Bidwell Band and the Harney Valley Band of the Northern Paiute tribe lived in the southeastern part of Oregon around Greaser Canyon. However, given the age of the carvings, it is possible that the Northern Paiute people had nothing to do with their creation.</p><br>
<p>The meanings of the Greaser petroglyphs are not known. They may have been used in religious ceremonies or marked tribal ownership of territory. The designs may have been map directions or simply art created to tell a personal story. No one knows.</p><br>
<h2>Protection</h2><br>
<p>Because prehistoric petroglyph sites have great archaeological value and are often associated with Native American cultural practices, they are identified for protection when located on federal lands. A majority of the government-owned petroglyph sites have been officially designated as "Areas of Critical Environmental Concern". This ensures maximum protection and careful preservation of these valuable cultural resources. There are also some sites of unique importance to the study of prehistory or of particularly cultural significance that have been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.</p><br>
<p>The Greaser petroglyphs were vandalized at least once. However, Bureau of Land Management archaeologists were able to repair the damage. Today, a sign warns visitors that altering the petroglyph designs in any way is a violation of federal law and can ruin the works.</p><br>
<h2>Location</h2><br>
<p>The Greaser Petroglyph Site is located 28 mi east of Lakeview, Oregon. The site is in the Warner Valley near Greaser Canyon, 5 mi east of the unincorporated community of Adel. The petroglyphs are carved on a southwest-facing basalt boulder, approximately 1/2 mi north of Oregon Route 140. The protected area around the petroglyphs covers 9 acre of open rangeland owned by the Bureau of Land Management.</p><br>
<p>Pulaski County Bridge No. 31  is a Stearns Truss Bridge originally built in 1905 in Pulaski County in the USA state of Indiana. In 2006, it was disassembled at its location over Big Monon Ditch, near Medaryville in Pulaski County, and moved to the Wabash and Erie Canal park in Delphi in Carroll County, Indiana. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places  in 2003, thanks to the efforts of a local Boy Scout. It is believed to be the last surviving Stearns Truss Bridge in the United States.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The bridge was erected over the Big Monon Ditch in 1905 by the Winamac Bridge Company. It was designed by William E. Stearns, and is the only Stearns Truss Bridge known left in existence in the United States. A unique feature of the bridge is that it was designed to be easily moved. Various connecting points were made to easily pivot into and out of place, and the caissons were made to be loaded and unloaded with ballast to anchor the structure in place. This allowed the bridge to carry a much greater load as a function of its weight.</p><br>
<p>It was placed on the National Register as part of an Eagle Scout project by Bradley Nielsen, who began the effort in 2002. The bridge and the road it served sat on farm property owned by his grandparents, and had been abandoned for some time. With the assistance of the Pulaski County Historical society, Nielsen researched the bridge&#39;s history and construction, and filled out the application to place the structure on the NRHP. In 2003 the bridge was placed on the Register as "Pulaski County Bridge No. 31".</p><br>
<p>The bridge was owned by the county, and in 2005 when the contracts were let to clean the Big Monon Ditch the bridge was in the way of the dredging equipment. The commissioners discussed demolishing the bridge, and it was decided that removal of the bridge was necessary.</p><br>
<p>A group of concerned historians involved with the Wabash and Erie Canal Park in Delphi came to the bridge&#39;s rescue. In December, 2005, the Pulaski county commissioners sold the bridge for $10 to the Delphi group. They moved the bridge to Delphi, and over the past several years—with assistance from various funding agencies—have rebuilt the structure. It was dedicated on November 11, 2007 as a featured element of the interpretive park, known as the "Blue Bridge". It was subsequently removed from the National Register in 2014.</p><br>
<p>The Mallon/Minkert building, at the northeast corner of Montgomery and Bill streets in Francesville, Indiana was built by local businessman in 1899. It replaced a frame structure on the same site, built in 1872, which burned. Mallon came to Francesville from Morgan County, Indiana in 1865, and in 1868 began to clerk with Samuel Reishling, who is credited as having begun the second-ever business in the town. A few years later Mallon struck out on his own, and says of him, "He is probably doing the leading business of this town." It was built in 1899, and is a two-tory, rectangular brick building measuring 40 feet wide and 80 feet deep.</p><br>
<p>After Mallon&#39;s death in 1915 the store was taken over by his son Cecil, who operated it until 1949, 77 years of continuous business under the ownership of father and son.</p><br>
<p>The store had an extremely close call in December, 1945, when a massive fire enveloped the block of buildings to its immediate east, on a bitterly cold night. Francesville historian Alyce Onken remembers standing on the street during the fire looking at the building, thinking, "It&#39;s gone for sure." Miraculously, despite the near-total destruction of its neighbors, the building survived with only minor damage. A careful eye will note a cosmetic repair to the east wall as the only reminder of the calamity</p><br>
<p>Many current residents of the town remember the store under the tenure of its second owners, Oscar and Jean Minkert. They came from North Judson to open Minkerts Dry Goods and Variety Store in 1949. Until Oscars death in 1992 it retained the same old-fashioned look and feel of its predecessor, as well some of its longstanding stock of dry goods and merchandise. To visit Minkert&#39;s was to take a trip through time to a now-lost era in American retailing, with high ceilings, narrow aisles, hand-crafted wooden display cases, and husband-and-wife proprietors who knew their customers as friends.</p><br>
<p>After Minkert died the building was purchased by Edison and Chrisann Gutwein, who moved their insurance business from a smaller building on Bill Street into the two-story structure. It was during their tenure that Mrs. Gutwein took an interest in the building&#39;s history, and she supervised its restoration back to the genteel beauty of its turn-of-the century provenance. She also did the research that in 1999 led to its addition to the National Register of Historic Places, one of the few structures in the county so far to achieve that designation.</p><br>
<p>In 2002 the building and insurance business were sold to Dennis and Kitty Gutwein, the fourth, and current, owners. The building is used for multiple commercial purposes.</p><br>
<p>The Mallon/Minkert building is almost completely intact and original, and is a notable historical asset.</p><br>
<p>Christ Church, Graveyard and Sextons House is an historic Episcopal church complex located at Worton, Kent County, Maryland. The church, also known as Christ Church IU, is a small brick structure, basilican in plan, with a narrower sanctuary appended. It was built in 1765 to serve as the parish church of Chester Parish which had been established that same year. It is a well-proportioned example of a small Gothic Revival structure interpreted in brick. The Sextons house dates from the period of the earlier church and consists of two adjoining sections, one brick and one stone, both one story high with dormers.</p><br>
<p>It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.</p><br>
<p>In 1835, the church sold part of its lands adjacent to the highway to the town&#39;s United Methodist church for its graveyard.</p><br>
<p>The Robinson Ranges are a range of hills approximately 120 km north of Meekatharra in central Western Australia. The range is a unique physographic feature located within the upper section of the Padbury group sequence in the Palaeoproterozoic basin. Robinson Range is situated on the boundary between the younger Gascoyne province to the North and the older Yilgarn block to the South.</p><br>
<p>It forms the boundary between the upper catchments of the Murchison and Gascoyne Rivers. The former arises from the southern slopes, flowing around 780 kilometres west to the Indian Ocean.</p><br>
<p>Iron Ore and manganese tenements exist close to the range and are held under native title by the traditional owners, the Nharnuwangga Wajarri and Ngarlawangga peoples. The mining company involved, Midwest Corporation, expect to begin advanced exploration in 2009 following a heritage agreement being completed in 2008.</p><br>
<p>The Palaeoproterozoic formation contains a high amount of Hematite and Goethite minerals that were first discovered in the 1970s.</p><br>
<p>St. Paul&#39;s Church, is an historic Episcopal church located near Chestertown, Kent County, Maryland</p><br>
<p>It is the earliest existing Episcopal church building on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, except for the restored Trinity Church, Church Creek and one of the first parishes established by the Colonial Assembly in 1692 for the dissemination of the Church of England throughout the province. St. Paul&#39;s Parish, Kent was one of the original 30 Anglican parishes in the Province of Maryland.</p><br>
<p>St. Paul’s Parish was established in 1692 as one of the original 30 Anglican parishes in the Province of Maryland. The first church was a simple frame building which, by 1711, had deteriorated beyond repair. Plans were made for a brick structure to cost, in the “currency” of the region and day, 70,000 pounds of tobacco!</p><br>
<p>Opened in 1713, St. Paul’s is currently the oldest continuously used Episcopal church building in Maryland. It measures 30 x with a semicircular apse on the east gable similar to the capitol in Williamsburg, VA. This would have required a highly skilled architect, but that name was not recorded. Additions occurred after 1841, when a robing room was built (later enlarged in 1967) then around 1908, when an organ room was built.</p><br>
<p>It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.</p><br>
<p>A colorful cleric of the colonial period was the Revd. James Sterling who served from 1740-63. A poet, playwright, socialite, and entrepreneur, he also managed to be made customs collector for Chestertown!</p><br>
<p>In 1766, the Vestry House, where church meetings were held, was built. Once common in Maryland, this is one of only two surviving (the other in Perryman).</p><br>
<p>The Revolution led to the departure of the then-rector, the Revd. Robert Read, in 1777, and St. Paul’s was served by Dr. William Smith of Emmanuel, Chestertown. Dr. Smith embraced Independence and was instrumental in organizing the disenfranchised Church of England parishes into the new Protestant Episcopal Church, as well as founding Washington College.</p><br>
<p>St. Paul’s, however, declined with the upheavals caused by the war and the contemporary rise of Methodism. An 1806 report shows nine Methodists for every Episcopalian in the area.</p><br>
<p>By 1840, membership had dwindled to 13 families. Fortunately, this was to be the low point in parish fortunes. The 1840’s proved to be years of growth as dedicated clergy and laity worked to reach people with no religious affiliation. A Sunday School was established and Free Blacks welcomed (Maryland was a slave state). It was during these years that the old box pews were replaced by the bench seat pews still in use.</p><br>
<p>The parish was torn by the Civil War with men on both sides of the conflict — those from Chestertown tending to the South and those from Rock Hall tending to the North. Despite the differences, however, the church, served by the Revd. Andrew Sutton, Jr., was able to minister to all.</p><br>
<p>During these years, the church acquired the stained-glass window behind the altar. This window incorporates panels in the black and gold colors used by Northern sympathizers with the red and white of Southern sympathizers. In the centre, a symbol of the Union 12th Corps, in which Eastern Shore Maryland regiments served, is joined with the "Cross Bottony" used by Maryland regiments in Confederate service and surmounting it is a dove representing the desire for peace.</p><br>
<p>The Revd. Sewell S. Hepburn arrived in 1874 and stayed until 1881. While he was locally known for his ministry, his grand-daughter, Katharine Hepburn, achieved some wider fame of her own!</p><br>
<p>The economic difficulties which plagued St. Paul’s during the latter part of the 19th c. reflected those of rural America in general — bank and crop failures. A succession of clergy were called, but lack of funds led to their eventual departures.</p><br>
<p>An exception to this pattern was the Revd. Christopher Denroche who arrived in 1892 after thirty years of ministry in his native Canada. He stayed until his death in 1906 and never once received his full salary. It was Fr. Denroche who instigated the plan to commemorate Kent County’s only War of 1812 action with building a memorial for the Battle of Caulk’s Field (Aug. 30th, 1814). It stands today.</p><br>
<p>Another rector who brought a wealth of previous experience was the Revd. William Wyllie who took up his duties at the age of sixty-five. Born in Scotland, he had served in South Dakota, New Mexico, Arizona, and Santo Domingo.</p><br>
<p>Having come at the depth of the Great Depression, and following on a reference to him as “a canny Scot”, the vestry minutes of 1939 record a “rising vote of thanks” “for his economic administration of the affairs of the parish.”</p><br>
<p>Certainly, the parish had reason to give thanks that he had arranged with Mr. Glenn Martin, owner of Remington (now Chesapeake) Farms and founder of the Martin-Marietta Corp., a substantial gift which both enabled the restoration of the church and secured financial stability.</p><br>
<p>The Revd. John Nelson succeeded him in 1948 and was present during two major building programs — the Parish Hall and Rectory (clergy hitherto had lived in Fairlee or Chestertown).</p><br>
<p>Baltimore architect Bryden Hyde designed these buildings, replicating features found in Annapolis’ Hammond-Harwood House and Chestertown’s Hynson-Ringgold House. He also painted the heraldic arms of the founding families above the Parish House fireplace. Mr. Hyde’s ancestor, the Revd. Stephen Bordley, had been St. Paul’s second rector (1697-1709) and had married into the Hynson family.</p><br>
<p>Due to the Episcopal Church&#39;s new requirement of mandatory retirement at age 72, Fr. Nelson was obliged to step down in 1959 while the Rectory was still under construction and never got to enjoy it.</p><br>
<p>The next rector, the Revd. George Taylor, oversaw the burgeoning of the Sunday School in the “Baby-Boomer” years. His excellent work in the parish was curtailed in 1966 when he was elected to be Bishop of Easton, an office to which he brought distinction.</p><br>
<p>In 1992, the parish celebrated 300 years with a festival year of events including a visit from Canon John Sausmarez of Canterbury Cathedral in Kent, England.</p><br>
<p>Membership growth led to an expansion of the Parish House with a classroom / office wing dedicated in 1999.</p><br>
<p>Shawanaga lake is a lake located in the Municipality of Whitestone, District of Parry Sound, Ontario, Canada.</p><br>
<p>It is a warm water lake with shoreline in Hagerman, Fergusson, and Burpee. Shawanaga lake has a long narrow shape and is heavily impacted by recreational boats. Shawanaga lake road runs along the north side of the lake, and is a seasonally-maintained road. The southern part of the lake, where the public boat launch is located, is accessible through Lorimer lake road.</p><br>
<p>Above Shawanaga lake lies Shawanaga Lake Conservation Reserve that encompasses a number of smaller lakes, such as Dunchurch lake, Boyd lake, De Volve lake, Blue lake, Snakeskin lake, Snake lake, Canning lake, Hobson lake, and Bell lake. The reserve consists of 4,937 hectares and is located</p><br>
<p>in the geographic Townships of East Burpee and Hagerman, in the Municipality of Whitestone, of the Territorial District of Parry Sound.</p><br>
<p>Sport fishing species include yellow perch, rock bass, Northern Pike and Smallmouth Bass.</p><br>
<p>The Carlton D. Wall House is a Frank Lloyd Wright designed home in Plymouth, Michigan. It is one of Wright&#39;s more elaborate Usonian homes. In 1941, recently married Mr. and Mrs. Carlton David Wall, who were Wright’s youngest clients, approached Wright to design a house for them after Carlton Wall studied Wright’s architecture in college.</p><br>
<p>Its form is a series of hexagons radiating from a central chimney or service core without any true right angles, with many different wings off it for a nursery, terrace, guest room and carport. The cypress and brick house came to be known as "Snowflake" because of the hexagonal patterns created by the diamond grid design. This was the first use of Wright’s modular diamond structure in Michigan, a technique he used elsewhere when incorporating a house into a hillside.</p><br>
<p>A massive brick retaining wall supports a dramatic terrace. Floor to ceiling windows, doors without mullions, and corner windows are used throughout the house. This brings the "outside in", which is the case in all Wright houses. From 1943-44, Milton Horn collaborated with Wright on a wood relief mural for the house. In 1947, a 1,000 ft&sup2; bedroom wing was added to accommodate the Walls&#39; growing family. It is located to the west of the original house.</p><br>
<p>Snowflake was purchased by Tom Monaghan (founder of Dominos Pizza) in 1983, and it was used on a rotating basis by executives of his corporation. It was to be part of Mr. Monaghans Frank Lloyd Wright Study Center. In the late 1980s it was sold to the current owners who use it as their personal residence.</p><br>
<p>Sedgeley was a mansion, designed by the architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe, and built on the east banks of the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, USA, in 1799-1802.</p><br>
<h2>Design and construction</h2><br>
<p>The land where the house was located was originally owned by Robert Morris, but was seized and auctioned off in 1799. William Cramond, a wealthy merchant, purchased the house. Immediately upon acquiring the land, Cramond hired Latrobe to improve the property and build the mansion, which was to serve as Cramond&#39;s country house. The mansion was situated on a hill overlooking the river, 80 feet below.</p><br>
<p>The two-story house, the first built in America in a Gothic Revival style, had a hip roof and dormers with steep roofs, and was approximately 75 ft in width and depth. Other Gothic elements included scalloped bargeboards on the eaves, and windows with label mouldings and other Gothic characteristics. Latrobes design called for ashlar stone exterior walls, stone or brick window trim, and wooden construction for the piazza. Cramond did not retain Latrobe to provide on-site supervision of construction and did not entirely follow Latrobes plan.</p><br>
<h2>Ownership</h2><br>
<p>Cramond owned the mansion for a short period, as he was forced to sell it in 1806 due to bankruptcy. Another merchant, Samuel Mifflin, bought the Sedgeley mansion, but he then sold the house in 1812 to James Cowles Fisher, a shipping merchant, who used it as a summer residence. For some period of time, Fisher left the house vacant or leased it to a tenant. Fisher sold it in 1836 to Isaac S. Loyd, a real estate speculator, who decided to subdivide the house and did not take good care of it, letting it fall into disrepair.</p><br>
<p>The city of Philadelphia purchased the adjacent Lemon Hill property in 1844, which was turned into a public park. By setting aside open space along the river, Philadelphia hoped to better protect the city&#39;s water supply.</p><br>
<h2>Porter House</h2><br>
<p>The Sedgeley property also included a servants cottage (the Porters House), designed by Latrobe, which still exists. Though Latrobe spent nearly a decade in Philadelphia, designing numerous buildings, the Sedgeley cottage is the only building of his that remains in Philadelphia. For more than a century, the Porter&#39;s House was used by the Park Guard and served as a jail. It was rescued from demolition and converted to office space in the 1990s by the Fairmount Park Historic Preservation Trust and is currently occupied by Outward Bound.</p><br>
<p>Armory Park Historic Residential District is a historic district in Tucson, Arizona. It was listed on the NRHP in 1976 and the district boundaries were increased in 1996.</p><br>
<p>Part of the eastern section of the Armory Park Historic Residential District, was the former location of company housing for employees of the Southern Pacific Railroad. In 2000, on this land, a solar-powered housing development known as Armory Park del Sol was built and the streets were named in honor of people that lived in the neighborhood or things related to the area. The uniqueness of this housing project, along with the locally themed street names gained enough attention that it was included in the "Street Smarts" column, run in the Arizona Daily Star newspaper.</p><br>
<p>Pima County Courthouse is the former main county courthouse building in downtown Tucson, Arizona. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was designed by Roy Place in 1928 in Mission Revival and Spanish Colonial Revival style architecture.</p><br>
<p>The building previously housed the Pima County Superior Court (1930-1977) and later, the Pima County Consolidated Justice Court (1977-2015), which handled lower-level state criminal matters and small claims cases. As of February 2015, court proceedings for Justice Court are held in a newer building shared with other Pima County departments, which is located at 240 North Stone Avenue. Superior Court proceedings are held in the Pima County Superior Court building, located at 110 West Congress Street.</p><br>
<p>As this building will be vacant by 2017, as the various departments and court functions relocate to newer facilities, Pima County is planning to convert the historic Courthouse to museum space. The county is in discussions with the University of Arizona and the Tucson Museum of Art to house exhibits; there will be a new café, and a memorial to the victims of the 2011 Tucson shooting that seriously wounded then-USA Representative Gabrielle Giffords.</p><br>
<p>Old Main, University of Arizona, originally known as the University of Arizona, School of Agriculture building, was the first building constructed on the University of Arizona campus in Tucson, Arizona, United States. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.</p><br>
<p>Designed by Phoenix architect James Miller Creighton, construction of Old Main began on October 27, 1887. The budget of $37,969 ran out before the roof was finished. When university officials discovered federal loans were available for agricultural schools, they renamed the building from the originally planned School of Mines to the School of Agriculture. Federal funding allowed completion of the building and it opened for the first class of the university on October 1, 1891. Old Main, then the only building on the campus, contained the classrooms, library, offices, and dorms. Six faculty taught 32 students in 1891.</p><br>
<p>In 1919, the Alexander Berger Memorial Fountain was constructed in front of Old Main. Berger funded the project as a memorial for 13 University of Arizona students who were killed in World War I, including his nephew. Completed for $5500, the fountain was dedicated on January 31, 1920 by General John J. "Blackjack" Pershing.</p><br>
<p>Due to neglect by the University, Old Main fell into disrepair and was condemned by the City of Tucson in 1938. Demolition was averted when the US Navy repaired the building in 1942, for use as a Naval Indoctrination Training School during World War II. The Navy then paid $20,000 in 1945 to turn it back into a functioning campus building.</p><br>
<p>The first floor of Old Main was restored and renovated in 2008 at a cost of $4.6 million. It then housed the Universitys Office of Admissions, Center for Exploratory Students, and the Dean of Students Office. In January 2013, renovation of the entire building began — including a modernization of the interior spaces, replacing the roof, and framing the porch. It reopened before the 2014-15 academic year. In addition to extensive improvements, the Office of the President was relocated to Old Main.</p><br>
<p>The Island Bird is a Chesapeake Bay log canoe, built in 1882, by William Sidney Covington in Tilghman, Maryland. She is a 27 ft sailing log canoe with a racing rig, a sharp stem with a longhead bow, and a sharp, raking stern. She is one of the smallest boats in the active racing fleet, with a beam of only 5 ft. The boat is privately owned by the descendants of Mr. Covington and has been racing every season since 1949. She one of the last 22 surviving traditional Chesapeake Bay racing log canoes that carry on a tradition of racing on the Eastern Shore of Maryland that has existed since the 1840s. <p>The Island Blossom is a Chesapeake Bay log canoe, built in 1892, by William Sidney Covington in Tilghman, Maryland. She is a 32 ft sailing log canoe with a beam of 6 ft. Double-ended, her bow is sharp with a straight, slightly raking stem and a longhead, and she has a sharp stern. The canoe is privately owned by the family John C. North II, descendants of Mr. Covington, and races under No. 9. She is one of the last 22 surviving traditional Chesapeake Bay log canoes, carrying on a tradition of racing on the Eastern Shore of Maryland that has existed since the 1840s. Skippered since 1999 by Corbin Penwell of St. Michaels, Maryland, Island Blossom has won a record nine consecutive High Point trophies for the fleet&#39;s overall season winner, finishing first overall from 2009-2017 to top the record originally set by Doug Hanks Sr., also aboard Blossom, between 1981-1986 and matched by Tyler Johnson on Persistence from 1998-2003. She is located at St. Michaels, Talbot County, Maryland.</p><br>

<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Mystery was built in a barn in Oxford, MD, as a secret weapon to defeat the Flying Cloud in the Governor&#39;s Cup, hence the name, Mystery. Results were mixed and she was eventually re-rigged as a sloop in the late-40s and was used as a cruising boat.</p><br>
<p>In 1955, she was purchased by John Whittum who sailed her all around the Chesapeake with her sloop rig until he re-rigged her for racing once again and began to compete in the log canoe regattas. He eventually won the Governor&#39;s Cup in 1963.</p><br>
<p>In the mid-70s, John moved to Colorado, leaving the Mystery with Francis Schauber who had been racing with him since the early 60&#39;s. Francis raced her for several years, before purchasing it outright in 1975. He then began a full overhaul on her, which by then, had been in serious disrepair. He stripped down the hull to the bare logs, cut out all the rotten spots and replaced the waterlogged plywood decks. He also increased her sail area substantially. The foremast height was increased to 60 feet, making it the tallest mast ever for a log canoe under 35 feet long. Mystery would hold this record until Jay Dee unveiled her 63 foot foremast in 2012.</p><br>
<h2>Recent history</h2><br>
<p>Mystery has refurbished many times over the years. Besides the overhaul from 1976, the most substantial occurred in 2001 when cheeks were added to her hull, with the desired effect to make her more stable.</p><br>
<p>In 2008, Mystery lost her foremast in the CRYCC regatta in a heavy air race. The mast, which was over 30 years old at the time, was deemed unfixable and a new one was built in time for the last two regattas of the 2008 season.</p><br>
<h3>2013 Racing Season</h3><br>
<p>In 2013, after only participating in two regattas during the 2012 season, Mystery made it out for the RHYC log canoe regatta, with the intent to compete in the rest of the season. However, the following week, once again in the CRYCC regatta, she lost her foremast when the shroud snapped. The mast was repaired, however she was unable to complete the season.</p><br>

<p>In 1946, the owner at the time wanted to immortalize his son, who had been killed in World War II. For the racing season of that year, Mystery was temporarily renamed Memory.</p><br>
<p>Lake Anneen, sometimes referred to as Anneen Lake or incorrectly as Nannine Lake, is a DIWA-listed salt lake system located in the Mid West region of Western Australia. The lake is situated about 40 km southwest of Meekatharra.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The lake is roughly 120 km&sup2; in area, and consists of a main waterbody with two elongate arms. The main waterbody is roughly rectangular, with its long side oriented along a north-westerly axis. A narrow arm, essentially a network of anastomosing creeks, arises from near the eastern edge, stretching north almost to Meekatharra; the lake receives inflow from this arm and also some smaller creeks on the west and north side. Drainage is via the other arm, which arises from near the western edge and reaches almost to headwaters of the Hope River, into which Lake Anneen flows following heavy rains. A low ridge nearly divides the lake roughly in two, and the Great Northern Highway now runs along this ridge.</p><br>
<p>Lake Annean is shallow, with a great many islands and peninsulas. Some parts of the lake almost always hold water, but the entire lake fills only after flooding caused by tropical summer and autumn rains. This occurs only every five to ten years.</p><br>
<p>It is one of the most important breeding sites in Western Australia for Gelochelidon nilotica (Gull-billed Tern) and Chlidonias hybridus (Whiskered Tern). It is also an important refuge for other waterbirds, the nearest adjacent wetland, Wooleen Lake, being nearly 200 km away.</p><br>
<p>The ghost town of Nannine is located on the northern banks of Lake Annean. The lake is no longer currently subject to any human use, except for some recreational sailboarding by residents of the area. Potential degrading processes include pastoral grazing; grazing and predation by feral and introduced animals; the illicit picking of wildflowers, and pollution by the highway or nearby gold mines.</p><br>
<p>St Ignace Island  is a large uninhabited island in Lake Superior, situated off the north shore at the entrance to Nipigon Bay, in Northern Ontario, Canada. The English name is a translation of the original French name given it by Jesuit missionaries in honor of their founder St. Ignatius of Loyola. The island is clearly depicted on the 1669 map "Lac Tracy ou Superieur avec les dependances de la Mission du Saint Esprit" attributed to Claude-Jean Allouez and Jacques Marquette.</p><br>
<p>The second largest island in Lake Superior and the fifth largest in the Great Lakes, St Ignace Island has an area of 274 km&sup2;.</p><br>
<p>Nipigon Strait separates it from the large Black Bay peninsula. St Ignace Island lies next to Simpson Island. The island is about 20 km from the nearest community, Red Rock, Ontario. Mount St Ignace is the highest point (about 569 metres above sea level), and the highest point on Lake Superior, though lower than the highest point in Ontario Ishpatina Ridge 693 metres.</p><br>
<p>Lansdowne, also known as Upper Deale or Lansdowne Farm, is a historic home and farm complex located at Centreville, Queen Anne&#39;s County, Maryland, United States. It consists of a brick dwelling, and a large barn, granary, and several outbuildings. The house was built in two distinct periods. The earliest house dates to the late colonial period and is a two-story, brick house, three bays wide and two rooms deep, with a single flush chimney on each gable. It is attached to a larger, Federal-period house built in 1823. The later house is brick, two and a half stories high, and was built directly adjoining the west gable of the earlier structure.</p><br>
<p>Lansdowne was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.</p><br>
<p>The Grotta di Ispinigoli is a karstic cave in the Supramonte massif, near Dorgali, Sardinia, Italy.</p><br>
<h2>Overview</h2><br>
<p>One of the largest grottoes in the island, houses a large stalactite-stalagmite compound, the tallest in Europe and one of the tallest in the world, measuring some 38 m in total. The grotto also include the so-called Abisso delle Vergini ("Abyss of the Virgins"), a c. 60 m-deep hole leading to a 12 km series of caves connecting Ispingoli to the other grotto of San Giovanni Su Anzu. Inside the cave were found traces of human bones and jewelry dating back the Bronze Age, the site was used as burial by the Nuragic Peoples.</p><br>
<p>At the bottom of this abyss cave the only known specimen of the extinct giant otter Megalenhydris was found. This animal is one of four species of extinct endemic otters on the island.</p><br>
<p>Cadair Fawr is a hill in the northern corner of the county borough of Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales. It lies within the Brecon Beacons National Park and Fforest Fawr Geopark. The 485m high summit at OS grid ref SN 978123 is marked by a trig point. Cadair Fawr is the highest point of a broad ridge known as Cefn Cadlan which forms the northern edge of Cwm Cadlan, a valley which itself runs east-northeastwards from the village of Penderyn. The name Cadair Fawr signifies the &#39;big chair&#39; whilst Cefn Cadlan signifies the &#39;ridge of the battlefield&#39;.</p><br>
<h2>Geology</h2><br>
<p>The summit is formed from Carboniferous Limestone whilst much of the Cefn Cadlan ridge which slopes away to the west is formed from the Twrch Sandstone (formerly known as the Basal Grit), which also dates from the Carboniferous period. A series of minor faults runs northwest to southeast through the hill whilst a few including the Coed Hir Fault run northeast to southwest, paralleling the major fault forming a part of the Neath Disturbance which runs through Cwm Cadlan. Much of the hill&#39;s surface is pitted by shakeholes, the larger of which occur on the areas where gritstone forms the surface. Quarries have been opened up in both the limestone and the gritstone over the years though none are now active.</p><br>

<p>The hill is designated as open country so freely available to walkers. It is readily accessed from the A4059 road which runs along its northern edge between Hirwaun and the A470 road south of Storey Arms.</p><br>
<p>Mynydd-y-glog is a hill just east of the village of Penderyn in the northern corner of the county borough of Rhondda Cynon Taff in south Wales. It lies within the Brecon Beacons National Park and Fforest Fawr Geopark. Its summit plateau rises to a height of 389m / 1277 ft at OS grid ref SN 982088, a spot marked by a trig point. To its north lies the partly dry valley of Pant Sychbant which forms the eastern extension of Cwm Cadlan. Its southern slopes are drained by various streams which feed into the Afon Cynon.</p><br>
<h2>Geology</h2><br>
<p>The hill is composed of a layer cake of rocks laid down during the Carboniferous period. Lowermost, and exposed along its shallow northern scarp, are Carboniferous Limestones whilst above these is the coarse Twrch Sandstone (formerly the Basal Grit) of the Marros Group (former Millstone Grit Series) also dating from the Carboniferous period. A number of northwest to southeast aligned faults runs across the hill. The limestone gives rise to karstic scenery including numerous shakeholes. These occur on the gritstone area as well as the limestone.</p><br>
<h2>Archaeology</h2><br>
<p>A number of ancient cairns are scattered about the slopes of Mynydd-y-glog.</p><br>
<h2>Access</h2><br>
<p>The hill is designated as open access so freely available to walkers. A public footpath runs southeastwards from the Cwm Cadlan road near Wernlas giving access from that direction. The hill can also be gained from the west via the former railway line at Penderyn and via the Forestry Commission&#39;s woodlands at Penmoelallt to the east.</p><br>
<p>Wickland is a historic mansion in eastern Bardstown, Kentucky. It has been the home of three state governors: two for Kentucky, and one in Louisiana.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>Wickland is a three-story mansion considered one of the best domestic Georgian buildings in the commonwealth of Kentucky. The first and second floors have identical floor plans. Each has a 44 by hall with four well proportioned rooms on each side. On the first floor the dining room and the library are on opposing sides. The third floor consists of a front attic and two ample rooms. The staircase which connects all three floors is cantilevered from the walls, with no visible support.</p><br>
<p>Originally, the kitchen was separated from the house by an open porch. It was a two-story building, with the second floor being used by transient workers and as a nursery. The roof tiles had been replaced four times from its construction in 1815 to 1972. In the 1930s amenities were added to the house, which included running water, electricity, baths, and furnaces.</p><br>
<p>Two other buildings are part of the 66 acre property. One is a heated outhouse large enough for two rooms. The other is a two story brick building the Wickliffe family lived in before the construction of Wickland.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Wickland was built between 1813 and 1817 for Charles A. Wickliffe, a Whig member of the Kentucky House of Representatives. Wickliffe used plans by John M. Brown and John Rogers. From September 27, 1839 to September 2, 1840 Wickliffe served as governor of Kentucky. Wickliffe&#39;s son Robert C. Wickliffe was governor of Louisiana from 1856 to 1860. J. C. W. Beckham, grandson of Charles, was born at Wickland and became governor of Kentucky from 1900 to 1907, later serving a term as United States senator. Hence, the nickname for Wickland "Home of Three Governors".</p><br>
<p>The Wickland in Shelbyville is named for this mansion. The wife of its builder, Charles Marshall, was the former Elizabeth Wickliffe, the daughter of Robert C. Wickliffe.</p><br>
<p>The Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels had an annual barbecue at the site, on the Sunday after the Kentucky Derby, for 25 years. They placed a marker by the house denoting the fact.</p><br>
<p>It is open for tours from March to October.</p><br>

<p>Penmoelallt or Onllwyn is a hill in the northern part of the county borough of Rhondda Cynon Taff in south Wales. It lies within the Brecon Beacons National Park and Fforest Fawr Geopark. To its east lies the deep valley of Cwm Taf and to its north a rather shallower valley in which the Nant Cadlan originates. To the west is the hill known as Mynydd-y-glog and to the south are slopes draining into the River Taff and the Afon Cynon. The hill culminates in a broken plateau with several knolls rising above the 420m contour. Its afforested nature makes it difficult to determine the precise location of its highest point but this probably lies somewhere around OS grid ref SO 003096. Older maps indicate a spot height of 1376 ft above sea level at SO 000090.</p><br>
<h2>Geology</h2><br>
<p>Penmoelallt is composed of a layer cake of rocks laid down during the Carboniferous period and subsequently tilted to the south into the South Wales Coalfield basin. Lowermost, and exposed along its northern and eastern scarps, are Carboniferous Limestones. There are a number of areas of gritstone pavement though most are obscured by trees.</p><br>
<h2>Access</h2><br>
<p>The hill is almost entirely clothed by a coniferous plantation managed by the Forestry Commission, who have dedicated their entire freehold estate as access land for walkers.</p><br>
<p>Numerous vehicular tracks (without vehicular access for the public) run through the forest. A few public rights of way cross through the forest, though some are difficult to access. Much of the bridleway between Ffrwd Uchaf and Pen-twyn-isaf serves as a forest track and provides ready access from Cwm Taf, as does the footpath which carries the Taff Trail between the same locations.</p><br>
<p>Dudleys Chapel is a historic Methodist church located at Sudlersville, Queen Annes County, Maryland. It was built in 1783 and is a simple brick structure with a moderately pitched gable roof. A coat of stucco was added in 1883, covering all of the original brickwork. The chapel has a prominent place in the early history of the Methodist Church in Maryland. It is one of the earliest surviving Methodist churches in Maryland, and was the first Methodist church built in Queen Annes County. Many of the prominent early leaders of the Methodist Church are known to have preached both at Dudleys including Francis Asbury, Thomas Coke, Richard Whatcoat, Jesse Lee, and Freeborn Garrettson.</p><br>
<p>It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.</p><br>
<p>Wickland is a historic house in Shelbyville, Kentucky, United States, across from Prospect Avenue on Kentucky Street. It is named for the Wickland mansion in Bardstown, Kentucky, and is part of the Shelbyville Multiple Resource Area.</p><br>
<p>Wickland was built by Charles Cotesworth Marshall, who was a circuit judge and Shelby County attorney, in 1901. His wife Elizabeth Wickliffe Marshall&#39;s ancestral home was the Bardstown Wickland; Elizabeth was the daughter of the former governor of Louisiana, Robert C. Wickliffe. Marshall was born in Mississippi on May 26, 1868 to former Confederate soldier Charles C. Marshall and Mattie (Hill) Marshall, but was reared in Shelbyville by his aunt due to his parents dying when he was one year old, and was taught at various schools, both public and private, around Shelbyville. His aunt was the wife of the Shelby County judge. Other owners of the property were Arthur Johnston, Hubert Johnston, B.A. Thomas, G. William Johnston, and Kenneth Harris.</p><br>
<p>Wickland is considered a superb example of Classical Revival architecture. It is a two story brick structure, with a pyramidal roof, right-side semi-octagonal projecting bay, and a central passage plan. The total property is less than a half-acre.</p><br>
<p>Wickland was one of several buildings studied since 1979 for the Shelbyville Multiple Resource Area. The Kentucky Heritage Council funded the effort of the Shelby County Historical Society to add many Shelbyville structures to the National Register, including Wickland. The original Wickland was placed on the Register a decade beforehand.</p><br>
<p>Carreg Dwfn (also referred to as Careg Dwfn and Carregydwfn and referred to also as Careg-y-dwfan.</p><br>
<p>) is a hill four miles southeast of Llandeilo and just to the south of the village of Trap in the county of Carmarthenshire, south Wales. It lies at the western extremity of the Brecon Beacons National Park and Fforest Fawr Geopark. Its summit at 283 m is towards the eastern end of a rocky east-west-aligned ridge.</p><br>
<h2>Geology</h2><br>
<p>The hill is formed from the coarse Twrch Sandstone (formerly known as the Basal Grit) laid down during the Namurian stage of the Carboniferous period. It is defined by faults to east and west. There are a handful of disused gritstone quarries on the southern slope of the hill. Quarrying rights at these sites were stopped by the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority in 2008. To its north is the large Craigyrodyn Quarry which worked the Carboniferous Limestone outcrop which parallels the narrow band of Twrch Sandstone running west to east through the region.</p><br>
<p>Glacial striae on rock surfaces high on the hill record that during the ice age, glacial ice travelled obliquely across it towards the southwest though lower down, to the south, the ice is recorded as moving more or less from east to west.</p><br>
<h2>Access</h2><br>
<p>Carreg Dwfn is designated as open country under the provisions of the CRoW Act 2000. Public footpaths run around the western, northern and eastern sides.</p><br>
<p>Trichrug  is a hill four miles east of Llandeilo and 3 miles south of Llangadog in the county of Carmarthenshire, southwest Wales. It lies within the Brecon Beacons National Park and Fforest Fawr Geopark. Its summit at a height of 415m above sea level is marked by a trig point.</p><br>
<p>It is a Marilyn with a prominence of 191 metres.</p><br>
<h2>Geology</h2><br>
<p>The hill is formed from a suite of rocks of mid-Silurian age which are tilted steeply towards the southeast forming a part of the Myddfai Steep Belt. The summit and the crest of the ridge extending southwest and northeast is formed from the Trichrug Sandstone. Its northwestern slopes are largely formed in the mudstones and sandstones of the Hafod Fawr Formation whilst its southeastern slopes are largely formed from the Raglan Mudstone Formation. These rocks are the uppermost (i.e. youngest) Silurian rocks of the area but are also considered to be the lowermost (i.e. oldest) beds of the Old Red Sandstone succession.</p><br>
<h2>Access</h2><br>
<p>There is no public access to the summit though a public footpath contours the hill at half-height on its northwestern side and an unmetalled public road passes through the col known as Bwlch y Gors immediately to its west. The Beacons Way descends this track northwards towards Y Garn Goch en route for Llangadog.</p><br>
<p>Carreg Cadno  is a hill five miles northeast of Abercraf in the county of Powys, south Wales. It lies within the Brecon Beacons National Park and Fforest Fawr Geopark. Its summit at OS grid ref SN 874161 reaches a height of 538m / 1763 ft above sea level. The hill is within the Ogof Ffynnon Ddu National Nature Reserve which is owned and managed by the Countryside Council for Wales.</p><br>
<h2>Geology</h2><br>
<p>The southern slopes of the hill are formed from the Twrch Sandstone, a coarse quartzitic sandstone (gritstone), formerly known as the Basal Grit of the Millstone Grit Series, and laid down during the Namurian stage of the Carboniferous period. The northern slopes are formed from the underlying Carboniferous Limestone. The area displays various features typical of karstic landscapes including hundreds of shakeholes in both the limestone and the gritstone areas. Substantial areas of gritstone country have foundered as the underlying limestone has dissolved away and caverns have collapsed. There are also areas of both limestone pavement and gritstone pavement. The latter occasionally retain striations on their polished upper surfaces due to scratching by stones embedded in the base of a moving icesheet during the last ice age some 18,000 years ago.</p><br>
<p>There are also pockets of silica sand where the gritstone has been intensively weathered. An economically valuable deposit of silica sand was worked near Pwll Byfre for many years and transported by tramroad to make refractory bricks (firebricks or silica bricks) at the nearby Penwyllt Dinas Silica Brick Works.</p><br>
<p>Ogof Ffynnon Ddu, Britain&#39;s deepest cave lies under the northern slopes of Carreg Cadno. The vertical interval between the sink of the Byfre Fechan stream at Pwll Byfre and its resurgence at Ffynnon Ddu is 300m / 1000 ft. The national nature reserve has been established to protect both the surface features and the vegetation and habitats which they provide and also the extensive cave network beneath.</p><br>
<h2>Access</h2><br>
<p>The hill is designated as open country and so freely available to walkers. A public footpath followed by the Beacons Way crosses the northern flanks of the hill in an east-west arc from Ystradfellte to Penwyllt. Many walkers start in a car park beside the limestone quarry at Penwyllt (OS grid ref SN855156).</p><br>
<p>The Cobblestone Path is a historic pathway along the east side of the Bardstown Historic District of Bardstown, Kentucky, passing by eight acres of land. Once longer, due to various construction it now remains between Flaget Avenue and Broadway, directly across from the Bardstown Civil War Museum. Because it was always considered part of the city&#39;s street system, the Cobblestone Path is owned by the City of Bardstown, even though it now serves only pedestrian traffic.</p><br>
<p>The Cobblestone Path was built in 1785. It was briefly part of the Louisville and Nashville Turnpike as well. With the building of the turnpikes to Bloomfield, Kentucky and Springfield, Kentucky, the pathway was reduced to walkers and equestrians.</p><br>
<p>The Cobblestone Path lies on top of a bluff created by Stewarts Creek Towne Branchs deep canyon, the other side of which rests My Old Kentucky Home State Park. The remaining path is 350 ft long and varies in width from twenty-eight feet to twelve feet. The dolomite limestone used to cobble the pathway are not uniformly shaped, and range from six to ten inches (254 mm) thick. Natural outcroppings of limestone and even a limestone boulder lie beside the path, some of which may serve as a bench. The top portion of the path was long a popular picnic spot from the 1870s to 1900, and gained the name Lovers Leap. Less than thirty feet below the Leap is a small dry cave almost impossible to gain access to.</p><br>
<p>Erosion has always been a threat to the path, with few cobblestones remaining at the bottom of the path. During the 1920s and 1930s, Mrs. Ernest Fulton planted many flowers along the path, and did her best to fight the erosion. As a result, the path has bush honeysuckle, evergreens, jonquils, and a spruce tree. With this and the natural undergrowth, vines, and native hardwoods, the path is essentially a tunnel.</p><br>
<p>On November 16, 1989 the Cobblestone Path was placed on the National Register of Historic Places, due to its importance in the history of transportation to Kentucky.</p><br>

<p>Mount Rainier , is the highest mountain of the Cascade Range of the Pacific Northwest, and the highest mountain in the USA state of Washington. It is a large active stratovolcano located 54 mi south-southeast of Seattle, in the Mount Rainier National Park. It is the most topographically prominent mountain in the contiguous United States and the Cascade Volcanic Arc, with a summit elevation of 14,411 ft.</p><br>
<p>Mt. Rainier is considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world, and it is on the Decade Volcano list. Because of its large amount of glacial ice, Mt. Rainier could produce massive lahars that could threaten the entire Puyallup River valley, and poses a grave threat to the southern sections of the 3.7-million-resident Seattle metropolitan area.</p><br>
<h2>Name</h2><br>
<p>Mount Rainier was first known by the local Salishan speakers as Talol, or Tacoma or Tahoma. One hypothesis of the word origin is ("mother of waters"), in the Lushootseed language spoken by the Puyallup people. Another hypothesis is that "Tacoma" means "larger than Mount Baker" in Lushootseed: "Ta", larger, plus "Koma (Kulshan)", Mount Baker. Other names originally used include Tahoma, Tacobeh, and Pooskaus.</p><br>
<p>The current name was given by George Vancouver, who named it in honor of his friend, Rear Admiral Peter Rainier. The map of the Lewis and Clark expedition of 1804-1806 refers to it as "Mt. Regniere".</p><br>
<p>Although "Rainier" had been considered the official name of the mountain, Theodore Winthrop, in his posthumously published 1862 travel book The Canoe and the Saddle, referred to the mountain as "Tacoma" and for a time, both names were used interchangeably, although "Mt. Tacoma" was preferred in the city of Tacoma.</p><br>
<p>In 1890, the United States Board on Geographic Names declared that the mountain would be known as "Rainier". Following this in 1897, the Pacific Forest Reserve became the Mount Rainier Forest Reserve, and the national park was established three years later. Despite this, there was still a movement to change the mountain&#39;s name to "Tacoma" and Congress was still considering a resolution to change the name as late as 1924.</p><br>
<p>In the lead up to Super Bowl XLVIII, the Washington State Senate passed a resolution on Friday, January 31, 2014, temporarily renaming the mountain Mount Seattle Seahawks until the midnight after the Super Bowl, Monday, February 3, 2014, in response to the renaming of 53 mountains in Colorado after the 53 members of the Denver Broncos by Governor of Colorado John Hickenlooper.</p><br>
<p>After the 2015 restoration of the original name Denali to Mount McKinley in Alaska, debate over Mount Rainier&#39;s name intensified.</p><br>
<h2>Geographical setting</h2><br>
<p>Mount Rainier is the highest mountain in Washington and the Cascade Range. This peak is located just east of Eatonville and just southeast of Seattle and Tacoma. Mount Rainier is ranked third of the 128 ultra-prominent mountain peaks of the United States. Mount Rainier has a topographic prominence of 13,210 ft, which is greater than that of K2, the world&#39;s second-tallest mountain, at 13,189 ft. On clear days it dominates the southeastern horizon in most of the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area to such an extent that locals sometimes refer to it simply as "the Mountain." On days of exceptional clarity, it can also be seen from as far away as Corvallis, Oregon (at Marys Peak) and Victoria, British Columbia.</p><br>
<p>With 26 major glaciers and 36 square miles of permanent snowfields and glaciers, with nearly 2 mi of passages.</p><br>
<p>A small crater lake about 130 by in size and 16 ft deep, the highest in North America with a surface elevation of 14,203 ft, occupies the lowest portion of the west crater below more than 100 ft of ice and is accessible only via the caves.</p><br>
<p>The Carbon, Puyallup, Mowich, Nisqually, and Cowlitz Rivers begin at eponymous glaciers of Mount Rainier. The sources of the White River are Winthrop, Emmons, and Fryingpan Glaciers. The White, Carbon, and Mowich join the Puyallup River, which discharges into Commencement Bay at Tacoma; the Nisqually empties into Puget Sound east of Lacey; and the Cowlitz joins the Columbia River between Kelso and Longview.</p><br>
<h3>Subsidiary peaks</h3><br>
<p>The broad top of Mount Rainier contains three named summits. The highest is called the Columbia Crest. The second highest summit is Point Success, 14,158 ft, at the southern edge of the summit plateau, atop the ridge known as Success Cleaver. It has a topographic prominence of about 138 ft, so it is not considered a separate peak. The lowest of the three summits is Liberty Cap, 14,112 ft, at the northwestern edge, which overlooks Liberty Ridge, the Sunset Amphitheater, and the dramatic Willis Wall. Liberty Cap has a prominence of 492 ft, and so would qualify as a separate peak under most strictly prominence-based rules. A prominence cutoff of 400 ft is commonly used in Washington state.</p><br>
<p>High on the eastern flank of Mount Rainier is a peak known as Little Tahoma Peak, 11,138 ft, an eroded remnant of the earlier, much higher, Mount Rainier. It has a prominence of 858 ft, and it is almost never climbed in direct conjunction with Columbia Crest, so it is usually considered a separate peak. If considered separately from Mt. Rainier, Little Tahoma Peak would be the third highest mountain peak in Washington.</p><br>
<h2>Geology</h2><br>
<p>Mount Rainier is a stratovolcano in the Cascade Volcanic Arc that consists of lava flows, debris flows, and pyroclastic ejecta and flows. Its early volcanic deposits are estimated at more than 840,000 years old and are part of the Lily Formation (about 2.9 million to 840,000 years ago). The early deposits formed a "proto-Rainier" or an ancestral cone prior to the present-day cone. The present cone is more than 500,000 years old.</p><br>
<p>The volcano is highly eroded, with glaciers on its slopes, and appears to be made mostly of andesite. Rainier likely once stood even higher than today at about 16,000 ft before a major debris avalanche and the resulting Osceola Mudflow approximately 5,000 years ago.</p><br>
<p>In the past, Rainier has had large debris avalanches, and has also produced enormous lahars (volcanic mudflows) due to the large amount of glacial ice present. Its lahars have reached all the way to Puget Sound, a distance of more than 30 mi. Around 5,000 years ago, a large chunk of the volcano slid away and that debris avalanche helped to produce the massive Osceola Mudflow, which went all the way to the site of present-day Tacoma and south Seattle. This massive avalanche of rock and ice removed the top 1,600 ft of Rainier, bringing its height down to around 14,100 ft. About 530 to 550 years ago, the occurred, although this was not as large-scale as the Osceola Mudflow.</p><br>
<p>After the major collapse approximately 5,000 years ago, subsequent eruptions of lava and tephra built up the modern summit cone until about as recently as 1,000 years ago. As many as 11 Holocene tephra layers have been found.</p><br>
<h3>Modern activity and the current threat</h3><br>
<p>The most recent recorded volcanic eruption was between 1820 and 1854, but many eyewitnesses reported eruptive activity in 1858, 1870, 1879, 1882 and 1894 as well.</p><br>
<p>Although Mount Rainier is now dormant, Seismic monitors have been located in Mount Rainier National Park and on the mountain itself to monitor activity. However, an eruption could be deadly for all living in areas within the immediate vicinity of the volcano and an eruption would also cause trouble from Vancouver, Canada to San Francisco because of the massive amounts of ash blasting out of the volcano into the atmosphere.</p><br>
<p>Mount Rainier is located in an area that itself is part of the eastern rim of the Pacific Ring of Fire. This includes mountains and calderas like Mount Shasta and Lassen Peak in California, Crater Lake, Three Sisters, and Mount Hood in Oregon, Mount Saint Helens, Mount Adams, Glacier Peak, and Mount Baker in Washington, and Mount Cayley, Garibaldi, Silverthrone, and Mount Meager in British Columbia. All of the above are dormant, but alive, and scientists on both sides of the border gather research of the past eruptions of each in order to predict how mountains in this arc will behave and what they are capable of in the future, including Mount Rainier. Of these, only two have erupted since the beginning of the twentieth century: Lassen in 1915 and St. Helens in 1980 and 2004. However, past eruptions in this volcanic arc have multiple examples of sub-plinian eruptions or higher: Crater Lakes last eruption as Mount Mazama was large enough to cause its cone to implode, and Mt. Rainiers closest neighbor, Mount St. Helens, had a huge chunk of the side of the mountain blow up in a phreatic explosion caused by a mix of gas and water. Where St. Helens was once perfectly symmetrical there is now, thirty five years later, a huge crater at the top of one face. Statistics place the likelihood of a major eruption in this range at 2-3 per century.</p><br>
<p>Mount Rainier is currently listed as a Decade Volcano, or one of the 16 volcanoes with the greatest likelihood of causing great loss of life and property if eruptive activity resumes. If Mt. Rainier were to erupt as powerfully as Mount St. Helens did in its May 18, 1980 eruption, the effect would be cumulatively greater, because of the far more massive amounts of glacial ice locked on the volcano compared to Mount St. Helens, the vastly more heavily populated areas surrounding Rainier, and the simple fact that Mt Rainier is a much bigger volcano, almost twice the size of St. Helens. Lahars from Rainier pose the most risk to life and property, as many communities lie atop older lahar deposits. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), about 150,000 people live on top of old lahar deposits of Rainier. Rainier is also capable of producing pyroclastic flows and expelling lava.</p><br>
<p>According to K. Scott, a scientist with the USGS:</p><br>
<p>"A home built in any of the probabilistically defined inundation areas on the new maps is more likely to be damaged or destroyed by a lahar than by fire...For example, a home built in an area that would be inundated every 100 years, on the average, is 27 times more likely to be damaged or destroyed by a flow than by fire. People know the danger of fire, so they buy fire insurance and they have smoke alarms, but most people are not aware of the risks of lahars, and few have applicable flood insurance."</p><br>
<p>The volcanic risk is somewhat mitigated by lahar warning sirens and escape route signs in Pierce County. The more populous King County is also in the lahar area, but currently has no zoning restrictions due to volcanic hazard. More recently (since 2001) funding from the federal government for lahar protection in the area has dried up, leading local authorities in at-risk cities like Orting to fear a disaster similar to the Armero tragedy.</p><br>
<h3>Seismic background</h3><br>
<p>Typically, up to five earthquakes are recorded monthly near the summit. Swarms of five to ten shallow earthquakes over two or three days take place from time to time, predominantly in the region of 4 km below the summit. These earthquakes are thought to be caused by the circulation of hot fluids beneath Mount Rainier. Presumably, hot springs and steam vents within Mount Rainier National Park are generated by such fluids. Seismic swarms (not initiated with a mainshock) are common features at volcanoes, and are rarely associated with eruptive activity. Rainier has had several such swarms; there were days-long swarms in 2002, 2004, and 2007, two of which (2002 and 2004) included M 3.2 earthquakes. A 2009 swarm produced the largest number of events of any swarm at Rainier since seismic monitoring began over two decades earlier. Yet another swarm was observed in 2011.</p><br>
<h3>Glaciers</h3><br>
<p>Glaciers are among the most conspicuous and dynamic geologic features on Mount Rainier. They erode the volcanic cone and are important sources of streamflow for several rivers, including some that provide water for hydroelectric power and irrigation. Together with perennial snow patches, the 26 major glaciers cover about 36 square miles of the mountain&#39;s surface and have a volume of about 1 cumi.</p><br>
<p>Glaciers flow under the influence of gravity by the combined action of sliding over the rock on which they lie and by deformation, the gradual displacement between and within individual ice crystals. Maximum speeds occur near the surface and along the centerline of the glacier. During May 1970, Nisqually Glacier was measured moving as fast as 29 in per day. Flow rates are generally greater in summer than in winter, probably due to the presence of large quantities of meltwater at the glacier base.</p><br>
<p>The size of glaciers on Mount Rainier has fluctuated significantly in the past. For example, during the last ice age, from about 25,000 to about 15,000 years ago, glaciers covered most of the area now within the boundaries of Mount Rainier National Park and extended to the perimeter of the present Puget Sound Basin.</p><br>
<p>Between the 14th century and 1850, many of the glaciers on Mount Rainier advanced to their farthest extent downvalley since the last ice age. Many advances of this sort occurred worldwide during this time period known to geologists as the Little Ice Age. During the Little Ice Age, the Nisqually Glacier advanced to a position 650 to 800 ft downvalley from the site of the Glacier Bridge, Tahoma and South Tahoma Glaciers merged at the base of Glacier Island, and the terminus of Emmons Glacier reached within 1.2 mi of the White River Campground.</p><br>
<p>Retreat of the Little Ice Age glaciers was slow until about 1920 when retreat became more rapid. Between the height of the Little Ice Age and 1950, Mount Rainier&#39;s glaciers lost about one-quarter of their length. Beginning in 1950 and continuing through the early 1980s, however, many of the major glaciers advanced in response to relatively cooler temperatures of the mid-century. The Carbon, Cowlitz, Emmons, and Nisqually Glaciers advanced during the late 1970s and early 1980s as a result of high snowfalls during the 1960s and 1970s. Since the early-1980s, however, many glaciers have been thinning and retreating and some advances have slowed.</p><br>
<p>The glaciers on Mount Rainier can generate mudflows, through glacial outburst floods not associated with any eruption. The South Tahoma Glacier generated 30 floods in the 1980s and early 1990s, and again in August, 2015.</p><br>
<h2>Human history</h2><br>
<p>At the time of European contact, the river valleys and other areas near the mountain were inhabited by many Pacific Northwest tribes who hunted and gathered berries in its forests and mountain meadows. These included the Nisqually, Cowlitz, Yakama, Puyallup, and Muckleshoot.</p><br>
<p>Captain George Vancouver reached Puget Sound in early May 1792 and became the first European to see the mountain.</p><br>
<p>In 1833, Dr. William Fraser Tolmie explored the area looking for medicinal plants. Hazard Stevens and P. B. Van Trump received a hero&#39;s welcome in the streets of Olympia after their successful summit climb in 1870. The first female ascent was made in 1890 by Fay Fuller, accompanied by Van Trump and three other teammates.</p><br>
<p>John Muir climbed Mount Rainier in 1888, and although he enjoyed the view, he conceded that it was best appreciated from below. Muir was one of many who advocated protecting the mountain. In 1893, the area was set aside as part of the Pacific Forest Reserve in order to protect its physical and economic resources, primarily timber and watersheds.</p><br>
<p>Citing the need to also protect scenery and provide for public enjoyment, railroads and local businesses urged the creation of a national park in hopes of increased tourism. On March 2, 1899, President William McKinley established Mount Rainier National Park as America&#39;s fifth national park. Congress dedicated the new park "for the benefit and enjoyment of the people" and "... for the preservation from injury or spoliation of all timber, mineral deposits, natural curiosities, or wonders within said park, and their retention in their natural condition."</p><br>
<p>On 24 June 1947, Kenneth Arnold reported seeing a formation of nine unidentified flying objects over Mount Rainier. His description led to the term "flying saucers".</p><br>
<p>In 1998, the United States Geological Survey began putting together the Mount Rainier Volcano Lahar Warning System to assist in the emergency evacuation of the Puyallup River valley in the event of a catastrophic debris flow. It is now run by the Pierce County Department of Emergency Management. Tacoma, at the mouth of the Puyallup, is only 37 mi west of Rainier, and moderately sized towns such as Puyallup and Orting are only 27 and away, respectively.</p><br>
<p>Mt. Rainier appears on four distinct United States postage stamp issues. In 1934, it was the 3-cent issue in a series of National Park stamps, and was also shown on a souvenir sheet issued for a philatelic convention. The following year, in 1935, both of these were reprinted by Postmaster General James A. Farley as special issues given to officials and friends. Because of complaints by the public, "Farley&#39;s Follies" were reproduced in large numbers. The second stamp issue is easy to tell from the original because it is imperforate. Both stamps and souvenir sheets are widely available.</p><br>
<p>The Washington state quarter, which was released on April 11, 2007, features Mount Rainier and a salmon.</p><br>
<h2>Climbing</h2><br>
<p>Mountain climbing on Mount Rainier is difficult, involving traversing the largest glaciers in the USA south of Alaska. Most climbers require two to three days to reach the summit, with a success rate of approximately 50%. Climbing teams require experience in glacier travel, self-rescue, and wilderness travel. About 8,000 to 13,000 people attempt the climb each year, about 90% via routes from Camp Muir on the southeast flank.</p><br>
<p>Most of the rest ascend Emmons Glacier via Camp Schurman on the northeast. About half of the attempts are successful, with weather and physical conditioning of the climbers being the most common reasons for failure. All climbers who plan to climb above high camps, Camp Muir and Camp Schurman, are required by law to purchase a Mount Rainier Climbing Pass and register for their climb.</p><br>
<p>Additionally, solo climbers must fill out a solo climbing request form and receive written permission from the Superintendent before attempting to climb.</p><br>
<h3>Climbing routes</h3><br>
<p>All climbing routes on Mount Rainier require climbers to possess some level of technical climbing skill. This includes ascending and descending the mountain with the use of technical climbing equipment such as crampons, ice axes, harnesses, and ropes. Difficulty and technical challenge of climbing Mount Rainier can vary wildly between climbing routes. Routes are graded in NCCS Alpine Climbing format.</p><br>
<p>The normal route to the summit of Mount Rainier is the Disappointment Cleaver Route, grade II-III. As climbers on this route have access to the permanently established Camp Muir, it sees the significant majority of climbing traffic on the mountain. This route is also the most common commercially guided route. The term "cleaver" is used in the context of a rock ridge that separates two glaciers. The reason for naming this cleaver a "disappointment" is unrecorded, but it is thought to be due to climbers reaching it only to recognize their inability to reach the summit. An alternative route to the Disappointment Cleaver is the Ingraham Glacier Direct Route, grade II, and is often used when the Disappointment Cleaver route cannot be climbed due to poor route conditions.</p><br>
<p>The Emmons Glacier Route, grade II, is an alternative to the Disappointment Cleaver route and poses a lower technical challenge to climbers. The climbers on the route can make use of Camp Schurman (9,500 ft), a glacial camp site. Unlike Camp Muir, Camp Schurman has no permanent structure, so climbers must carry their overnight equipment to the location.</p><br>
<p>The Liberty Ridge Route, grade IV, was first climbed by Ome Daiber, Arnie Campbell and Jim Burrow in 1935 and is listed as one of the Fifty Classic Climbs of North America by Steve Roper and Allen Steck. The Liberty Ridge Route is a considerably more challenging and objectively dangerous route than the normal route to the summit. This route only accounts for approximately 2% of climbers on the mountain, but accounts for approximately 25% of deaths on the mountain. The Liberty Ridge Route runs up the center of the North Face of Mount Rainier and crosses the very active Carbon Glacier.</p><br>
<h3>Dangers and accidents</h3><br>
<p>About two mountaineering deaths each year occur because of rock and ice fall, avalanche, falls, and hypothermia associated with severe weather (58 reported since and including the 1981 accident through 2010 per American Alpine Club Accidents in North American Mountaineering and the NPS).</p><br>
<p>The worst mountaineering accident on Mount Rainier occurred in 1981, when eleven people lost their lives in an ice fall on the Ingraham Glacier.</p><br>
<p>This was the largest number of fatalities on Mount Rainier in a single incident since 32 people were killed in a 1946 plane crash on the South Tahoma Glacier.</p><br>
<p>More recently, the mountain received media attention in 2012, as one of the park rangers lost his life when several climbers were caught in a storm while trying to ascend the mountain. While trying to help load the climbers into a rescue helicopter, the ranger lost his footing, and slid 3,700 ft to his death.</p><br>
<p>In one of the worst disasters on the mountain in over thirty years, six climbers—two guides, and four clients—last heard from on May 28, 2014, were presumed dead on May 31, 2014, when low-flying search helicopters pinged the signals from the avalanche beacons worn by the climbers. Officials concluded that there was no possible chance of survival after the climbers fell 3,300 feet (1,000 m) while attempting or returning from the summit via the Liberty Ridge climbing route. Searchers found tents and clothes along with rock and ice strewn across a debris field on the Carbon Glacier at 9,500 ft, possible evidence for a slide or avalanche in the vicinity where the team went missing, though the exact cause of the accident is unknown. The bodies of three of the guest climbers were spotted on August 7, 2014, during a training flight and subsequently recovered on August 19, 2014. The bodies of the fourth guest climber and two guides have not been located.</p><br>
<h2>Outdoor recreation</h2><br>
<p>Hiking, backcountry skiing, photography, and camping are popular in the park. Hiking trails, including the Wonderland Trail—a 93 mi circumnavigation of the peak—provide access to the backcountry. Mount Rainier is also popular for winter sports, including snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.</p><br>
<h2>Climate</h2><br>
<p>The summit of Mount Rainier has an alpine climate.</p><br>
<p>The Straussee is a German lake located in Strausberg, Brandenburg. It is situated about 30 km north-east of the city of Berlin. The town of Strausberg occupies the eastern shore of the lake, whilst the forest of the Strausberger Wald is on the western shore.</p><br>
<h2>Overview</h2><br>
<p>The lake is approximately 3.8 km long and 600 m wide, with an average depth of 9.9 m and a maximum depth of 20 m. It is crossed in its middle by the Straussee Ferry, an unusual electrically propelled passenger cable ferry.</p><br>
<p>The lake is relatively rich in fish, and is popular with both anglers and commercial fishermen. It contains populations of northern pike, zander, eel, crayfish, burbot, various species of perch, and carp. Rainbow trout are bred in fish farms.</p><br>
<p>Mynydd Myddfai is a hill 4.5 miles southeast of Llandovery in the county of Carmarthenshire, southwest Wales. It lies within the Brecon Beacons National Park and Fforest Fawr Geopark. The hill is in the form of a broad ridge aligned southwest to northeast with three or four distinct tops separated by cols. The northwest side drops steeply away towards the village of Myddfai whilst the other side is a more shallow slope down towards Glasfynydd Forest which encircles Usk Reservoir. The plateau surface of the hill rises to a height of 440m at OS grid ref SN 806297 where a trig point has been erected.</p><br>
<h2>Geology</h2><br>
<p>The hill is composed of a variety of different rock formations all tilted steeply to the southeast in a structure known as the Myddfai Steep Belt. The summit ridge is formed from sandstones and mudstones of the Cae&#39;r Mynach Formation. Immediately southeast of these beds is the narrow band of the Tilestones Formation along which are a line of grassed over diggings left after these flaggy micaceous sandstones were extracted for use as roof tiles. Southeast again is the thick sequence of the Raglan Mudstone Formation.These last two formations are considered to be the lowermost of the Old Red Sandstone sequence though assigned like the rest of the rocks forming Mynydd Myddfai to the Silurian period. Northwest of the summit ridge are the sandstones and siltstones of the Hafod Fawr Formation and beneath them more sandstones, mudstones and siltstones of the Cwm Craig Ddu and Halfway Farm Formations. Northwest to southeast oriented faults cross the ridge in places and can be seen where they offset the line of the Tilestones workings.</p><br>
<h2>Archaeology</h2><br>
<p>There are several ancient cairns on the hill together with the line of old quarries mentioned above. The age of these workings is unknown though they may well have been active over an extended period. A variety of Roman remains are located on Mynydd Bach Trecastell just to the northeast of Mynydd Myddfai. A number of new archaeological finds in 2007/08 were made during the excavation of a deep trench across the northern end of Mynydd Myddfai for the laying of a controversial gas pipeline from Milford Haven to Tirley in Gloucestershire.</p><br>
<h2>Access</h2><br>
<p>The hill is designated as open country and so freely accessible to walkers. A bridleway runs across it from the dam of the Usk Reservoir northwest to Cwm yr Olchfa and another runs southeast from this one to meet a minor public road at the west end of the hill.</p><br>
<p>Mynydd Bach Trecastell is a hill on the border between the counties of Carmarthenshire and Powys in southwest Wales. It lies within the Black Mountain  of the Brecon Beacons National Park and Fforest Fawr Geopark. Its summit is plateau-like and reaches a height of 412m at OS grid ref SN 827312 at Y Pigwn. The name signifies the &#39;little hill of castle town&#39;.</p><br>
<h2>Geology</h2><br>
<p>The summit of the hill is formed in sandstones and siltstones of the Cae&#39;r Mynach Formation which like all of the rocks are tilted steeply to the southeast as part of a geological structure called the Myddfai Steep Belt. The flaggy micaceous sandstones of the Tilestones Formation immediately overlies these beds and this is followed in turn by the thick sequence of the Raglan Mudstone Formation. These latter two formations are assigned as the oldest parts of the Old Red Sandstone though date from the Silurian. To the northwest are the various sandstones, mudstones and siltstones of the Aberedw, Hafod Fawr, Cwm Graig Ddu and Halfway Farm Formations. A series of northwest to southeast aligned faults cut through this succession and give rise to minor features in the landscape.</p><br>
<h2>Archaeology</h2><br>
<p>There are several round barrows and a stone circle on Mynydd Bach Trecastell dating to Bronze Age Britain. The Roman roads from CICVCIVM (Y Gaer) to MORIDVNVM (Moridunum, Carmarthen) via Llandovery ran over the hill and evidence of a couple of castras and a Roman fortlet remains on the hill.</p><br>
<h2>Access</h2><br>
<p>Mynydd Bach Trecastell is largely designated as open country and so freely accessible to walkers. The old Roman road provides access onto the hill from the Trecastle direction.</p><br>
<p>The Church of St John the Evangelist in Milborne Port, Somerset, England is a cruciform church of late Anglo-Saxon date and parts may well span the Norman conquest. The church has been designated by English Heritage as a Grade I listed building.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The chancellor Regimbald (a survivor from Edward’s reign into William’s) rebuilt his Minster at Milborne Port in “a sumptuous hybrid style.” It would seem logical to assign the now-demolished nave to this period, since the surviving south doorway of the nave was incorporated into the 1860s rebuild and is of Saxo-Norman design.</p><br>
<p>The church was part of the original endowment of Cirencester Abbey by Henry I, and held by them until the dissolution of the monasteries. An attempt was made around 1199 to make the church a prebend in Wells Cathedral however this was unsuccessful. In 1543 Winchester College acquired control and held it until 1824 when it passed to the Marquess of Anglesey and he sold his estate to Sir William Coles Medlycott in 1835. The Medlycott family memorials survive in the north transept.</p><br>
<p>From 1789 until 1825 the vicar was George Huntingford, the warden of Winchester College and bishop successively of Gloucester and Hereford, although the parish was looked after by the curate during that time.</p><br>
<h2>Architecture</h2><br>
<p>The chapel roof has been dated at 1641. In 1712 a west gallery was built for the singers and there was also an east gallery by 1747. The west gallery was enlarged in 1812-14 and in 1826 a two-bay north aisle with a gallery was added to the nave. In 1841 the east gallery over the rood screen was taken down.</p><br>
<p>Despite the Victorian nave (almost totally rebuilt 1867–69 to the designs of Henry Hall) and accompanying north aisle, there remains the pre-conquest central tower and chancel. The south transept was heavily restored and the north chapel wall rebuilt in 1843. The north transept was rebuilt along with the nave, so compared to pre-1867 half of the Anglo-Saxon church has now gone.</p><br>
<p>The new nave is 28 ft longer than the original it replaced. The old west front exhibited vestiges of triangular-headed arcading on either side of the inserted Perpendicular west window, and the lower part of the front was divided into compartments, by broad pilasters of plain square section. This was recorded by photography and the photo was published in 1893 by A. Reynolds.</p><br>
<p>The crossing (tower) is wider in plan than the nave, and markedly wider than the transepts or chancel. This is a distinctive Saxon trait, which may also be observed at nearby Sherborne Abbey (where traces of the Saxon rubble west wall may be seen).</p><br>
<p>Inside, the four crossing arches with their jambs survive, although the east and west arches have been rebuilt in pointed 14th-century form; the south and north arches have been slightly deformed to elliptical shape due to the pressure of the masonry, perhaps by the addition of the top stage of the tower at some later date. There are eight bells in the tower, three of 1736 by Thomas Bilbie, two by A. and C. Mears of 1846, and the rest recast in the 20th century.</p><br>
<p>Further restoration of the Chancel took place in 1908 when Sir Walter Tapper included plaster medallions high on the sanctuary walls. The glass in the east window is by Bainbridge Reynolds.</p><br>
<p>The chancel exhibits pilaster strip work, much disturbed and cut by Early English period windows, and has a close parallel at Bradford-on-Avon. The wall thickness of the chancel is 2 ft 8in, which is a typical Anglo-Saxon dimension.</p><br>
<p>The church, with its Anglo-Saxon features, is of major importance to our understanding of the larger minsters in pre-conquest England.</p><br>
<p>The Battery Park Hotel is the name given to two hotels in Asheville, North Carolina. The one standing today is 14 stories tall and was built in 1924 by Edwin W. Grove, during a time of increased tourism in the North Carolina mountains. It replaced a Queen Anne style hotel which stood 125 feet tall. The name came from the fact that Confederate forces used the site for batteries of artillery.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The original Battery Park Hotel was built in 1886 by Colonel Frank Coxe. It was designed by Philadelphia architect Edward Hazlehurst (1853-1915) in "spectacular" Queen Anne style. It was the first hotel in the South with an electric elevator, and one of the first with electric lighting.</p><br>
<p>Once the railroad reached Asheville in 1880, the mountain town attracted 20 passenger trains a day from the nations largest cities, and people found out what a wonderful place the community was to visit. One reason for visiting Asheville was the clean mountain air, which helped problems such as tuberculosis. Fine hotels were built, and Coxes Battery Park Hotel was the best of these. For one thing, its location on Asheville&#39;s tallest hill provided magnificent views.</p><br>
<p>The Rockefeller and Lorillard families were among those who stayed in the Battery Park. Another notable guest was George Vanderbilt, who from his window could see the land that would one day become Biltmore Estate.</p><br>
<p>By 1920, the Asheville Citizen reported the Battery Park had changed management three times. Edwin Wiley Grove bought the Battery Park in 1921. In 1922 he announced that it would remain a resort hotel for winter and summer, while he would add a second year-round hotel nearby. Plans changed later, however. People hated to see the old Battery Park Hotel torn down, but Grove, known also for the Grove Park Inn, built a fine hotel in the same location. Despite its architectural value, which Grove acknowledged, the old building was "rapidly outgrowing its period of usefulness". Some sources say it was damaged by a fire before being torn down.</p><br>
<p>Architect William Lee Stoddart of New York City designed the 220-room Battery Park Hotel that stands today. The modern building was built of reinforced concrete with brick, limestone, and terra cotta, with a Mission Revival roof that offered a dining area. The architectural style was a mix of Neoclassical and "Spanish romanticism".</p><br>
<p>On September 4, 1943 a USA Government Official, Clifton Alheit, jumped to his death off the roof of the Battery Park Hotel in an apparent suicide.</p><br>
<p>The hotel closed October 30, 1972 and Billy Shadrick of Housing Projects, Inc. took it over in 1979, keeping the historic exterior with the help of preservation tax credits, and converting the building into apartments for senior citizens. Today it is owned by National Church Residences, and businesses operate on the first floor. It is located in the Downtown Asheville Historic District.</p><br>
<p>Korigad  is a hill fort located about 20 km south of Lonavla in Pune district, Maharashtra, India. Its date of construction is not known but likely predates 1500. It is about 923 m above sea level. The planned township of Aamby Valley is built over the fort&#39;s southern and eastern foothills. The closest village is Peth Shahpur, about 1 km north of the fort.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>This fort was incorporated into his kingdom by the Maratha ruler Shivaji along with the forts of Lohagad, Visapur, Tung and Tikona in 1657. On March 11, 1818, Colonel Prother tried to take over this fort but even after a prolonged siege could not make any headway. Finally on 14 March, by igniting the stored ammunition by means of a loose cannonball he succeeded and this fort went to the British.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>The fort is located about 923 m above sea level, rising over 200 m higher than the neighboring valleys. To the east, there lie two artificial lakes part of the Aamby Valley project which later drain into the Mulshi reservoir. There are two lakes on the top of the fort.</p><br>
<h2>Structures on the Fort</h2><br>
<p>A temple to its patron goddess Koraidevi also exists along with several smaller temples to dedicated to Vishnu and Shiva. The former has been recently renovated and has a 3 foot high Deepmala(tower of lamps). Its massive gate is also intact. Several ruins of older structures within the fort still exist. It has six cannons - the largest of which called the Laxmi Toph is located near the Korai Devi temple.</p><br>
<h2>How to reach</h2><br>
<p>To reach Korigad you should have your own vehicle as there are very few transportation options available from Lonavla. Take the Aamby Vally road from Lonavla, keep driving till Peth Shahpur village. Parking is provided near the bus stop on the road. A 5-foot wide earthen road leads to the foot steps of the Korigad fort. It is an easy climb up to the fort. You can also hire cabs from Lonavala. The Aamby Vally buses from Lonavala bus station are also available. This fort can be visited in any time of the year. Even a night trek during summer gives nice experience. There are lot of camping sites on the fort. There are three temples on the fort which provide ample cover. The Korai Devi temple can accommodate 25 persons.</p><br>
<p>Sgurra Bhreac , sometimes referred to as the Big Rock, is a Canadian peak located in the East Bay Hills of Cape Breton Island, an extension of the Appalachian mountain chain in the province of Nova Scotia. Sgurra Bhreac is a prominent rock outcrop, rising 50 m from the northern edge of The Big Barren, between the Breac Brook and Glengarry Valleys, and is the highest elevation point on Cape Breton Island south of the Bras d&#39;Or Lake.</p><br>
<p>Sgurra Bhreac is a challenging but popular hiking/geocaching destination as the view from its summit is impressive. From here one can see Sydney, Glace Bay, the Bras d&#39;Or Lake, the Mira River and most of the Mira area, Loch Lomond, the Atlantic Ocean, and many other lakes, ridges, valleys and bogs.</p><br>
<p>Located 30 km west of Sydney, inland of the community of Big Pond and 1 km southwest of East of Rock Lake, the peak can be approached to within 1 km by back roads, either Glengarry Rd. (named "Spring Road" on older maps) to the south or a road (unnamed on current topographical maps) to the north passing through Rear Big Pond, which follows the Breac Brook Valley. The final approach to the peak is by hiking.</p><br>
<p>There is a fourth order Natural Resources Canada Geodetic Survey Division Station (Unique Number: 21139) on the summit, consisting of three markers. Two are brass/bronze disks and one is a copper survey bolt. This station was established sometime before 1921.</p><br>

<p>Mana Pass , alternatively Māna La, Chirbitya, Chirbitya-la, or Dungri La, is a mountain pass in the Himalayas on the border between India and Tibet. It appears to now be one of the highest vehicle-accessible pass in the world, containing a road constructed in the 2005-2010 period for the Indian military by the Border Roads Organisation and visible on 2011 imagery on visual globe systems such as Google Earth. The well-graded gravel-dirt road is higher on the Indian side than the new road on the Tibetan side, and rises to 5,610 m on the Indian side of the border, 250m west of the low point of the 5,545 m Mana Pass SRTM.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>Mana Pass is located within the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve, 24 km north of the town of Mana, India and 52 km north of the Hindu pilgrimage town of Badrinath in Uttarakhand. It is the source of the Saraswati River, the longest stem of one of the longest Ganges tributaries, the Alaknanda River. That river trickles through several scenic small ponds between the pass and Lake Deo Tal three km southwest of the pass. Mana pass is also the key col for climbing Chaukhamba peak.</p><br>

<p>Mana Pass was an ancient trade route between Uttarakhand and Tibet. Mana Pass led from Badrinath to the kingdom, now province, of Guge in Tibet. The Portuguese Jesuits António de Andrade and Manuel Marques became the first known Europeans to enter Tibet across Mana Pass in 1624. The pass continued as a minor trade route until its closure in 1951 by the Chinese. On April 29, 1954, China and India signed an agreement granting pilgrims and indigenous travelers the right to travel between the two countries through Mana Pass.</p><br>

<p>The pass is reached from the south by an extension of India National Highway 7 (NH-7, old number NH-58) that connects Fazilka with Badrinath, though beyond Badrinath the graded road is subject to landslides. Group of enthusiast motorcycle riders often can be seen on this road. Free Souls Rider Motorcycle Club was first non military citizens to scale the heights of Mana Pass and hold the record in The Limca Book Of Records.</p><br>
<p>The Bodie Island Lifesaving Station, also known as the Bodie Island Coast Guard Station, is located on the Outer Banks of North Carolina at the southern end of Bodie Island, within Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The 10 acre district includes a residence, the lifesaving station, the Coast Guard station, and an observation tower, as well as a number of utility buildings. The facility was turned over to the National Park Service in 1953, with the establishment of the national seashore. The primary structure, the lifesaving station, was built in 1878, and was converted to a residence when the Coast Guard station was built in 1925. It was moved to its present location in 1955, as it was threatened by shoreline erosion. The Coast Guard station was altered the same year to provide housing and office space for the National Park Service.</p><br>
<p>The Upper Florentine Valley, in the south of Tasmania, Australia, is an area recognised for its landscape and old growth forests. It is situated along the Gordon River Road near Maydena in the southwest of the island, roughly three hours drive from Hobart and comprises around 60 km&sup2; of temperate rainforest. The Upper Florentine forms part of the Florentine catchment upstream  from Churchill Creek and lies just outside the World Heritage Area. Geographically it is an area of generally low relief valleys and flats. The area is a known habitat for threatened species of flora and fauna, including sallow wattle, myrtle elbow orchid, grey goshawk, and spotted-tail quoll.</p><br>
<p>In 2009, the Upper Florentine received attention in the media for a series of arrests made by Tasmanian Police of protesters taking part in various pro-conservationist rallies.</p><br>
<h2>Management controversy</h2><br>
<p>The valley is managed by Forestry Tasmania on behalf of the Tasmanian Government and features intermittently in the ongoing political debate on deforestation and the logging of old-growth forests of Australia. While Forestry Tasmania asserts that only ten percent of the Upper Florentine catchment is available for sustainable timber production, environmental groups argue that protected areas consist of shrubs and trees that are of little use to the timber industry, whereas old growth and high conservation value forests have been specifically targeted for timber harvest.</p><br>
<h3>Reaction to logging operations</h3><br>
<p>Ongoing logging operations in this area have prompted pro-conservationist groups such as the Derwent Forest Alliance and The Wilderness Society (Australia) to set up a permanent blockade in the area known as as early as 2006.</p><br>
<p>In 2011, community activism and environmental civil disobedience were continuing in the Upper Florentine with over 80 arrests being carried out in the area in 2010. Protesters utilised obstructionist techniques, such as blockading structures attached to tree sits to stand in the way of logging operations and prevent forest harvester equipment from moving into the valley. The conservationist camp is manned by environmental campaigners, including the organisation.</p><br>
<p>Hutt Lagoon is a salt lake located near the coast just north of the mouth of the Hutt River, in the Mid West region of Western Australia.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>Hutt Lagoon is an elongate lake that sits in a dune swale adjacent to the coast. The town of Gregory is located between the ocean and the lake&#39;s southern shores. The road between Northampton and Kalbarri, George Grey Drive, runs along its Eastern edge.</p><br>
<p>The lake is about 14 km in length along its northwest-southeast axis, parallel with the coast. It is around 2.3 km wide.</p><br>
<p>The Hutt Lagoon comprises most of the Hutt Lagoon System, a DIWA-listed wetland system that also takes in a number of adjacent small lakes, such as Utcha Swamp.</p><br>
<h2>Hydrology</h2><br>
<p>The lagoon, or marginal-marine salina, is an elongate depression about 70 km&sup2; in area, with most of it lying a few metres below sea level. It is separated from the Indian Ocean by a beach barrier ridge and barrier dune system. Similar to Lake MacLeod, 40 km to the north of Carnarvon, Hutt Lagoon is fed by marine waters through the barrier ridge and by meteoric waters through springs.</p><br>
<p>Due to the salina’s sub-sealevel position, seepage of seawater into the salina is continuous year round. During the winter wet season, the amount of water coming into the salina is substantially increased by the influx of meteoric groundwater. Hutt Lagoon has a Mediterranean climate; high evaporation rates (2,150 –) are characteristic of the summer. There is moderate rainfall in the winter. These factors combine to form a setting within which salt is deposited seasonally and the rates and style of precipitation follow a balance between influx of water and removal by evaporation. During the summer about 95% of the salina surface is a dry salt flat.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Hutt Lagoon was named by the explorer George Grey who camped on its eastern edge on 4 April 1839, while on his second disastrous expedition along the Western Australian coast. He mistook the wet season lagoon for a large estuary and named "the river and estuary now discovered" after William Hutt, M.P., brother of John Hutt, the second Governor of Western Australia. Hutt was a British Liberal politician who was heavily involved in the colonization of Western Australia, New Zealand and South Australia.</p><br>
<p>After Grey&#39;s arrival back in Perth, Governor Hutt dispatched the schooner Champion to investigate the large estuary and river discovered. In summer, January 1840, the crew of the Champion found the Hutt River at its mouth to be dry, and could not locate the large estuary described by Grey.</p><br>

<p>Hutt Lagoon is a pink lake, a salt lake with a red or pink hue due to the presence of the carotenoid-producing algae Dunaliella salina, a source of ß-carotene, a food-colouring agent and source of vitamin A. The lagoon contains the world&#39;s largest microalgae production plant, a 250 hectare series of artificial ponds used to farm Dunaliella salina.</p><br>
<h3>Brine shrimp</h3><br>
<p>Hutt Lagoon provides a commercial supply of Artemia parthenogenetica brine shrimp. Artemia is a specialty feed used by prawn and fish farmers and the aquarium fish trade.</p><br>
<h3>Salt and gypsum</h3><br>
<p>In 1854 the explorer Augustus Charles Gregory promoted the quantity and quality of the salt deposits at Hutt Lagoon and their proximity to Port Gregory. He also commended the gypsum deposits on the western shore of the lagoon.</p><br>
<p>At the 1873 Sydney Intercolonial Exhibition salt from the Hutt Lagoon deposit was Highly Commended. Hutt Lagoon gypsum received a Bronze Medal. Hutt Lagoon salt was also exhibited at the 1880 Melbourne Exhibition.</p><br>
<p>In August 1908 Port Gregory Saltworks consigned its first shipment of salt on the SS Venus. Production was seasonal, of the order of 4,000 tons per year and employing up to 50, until the salt operation went into liquidation in 1924.</p><br>
<p>The Wadi Qelt Synagogue, part of the Hasmonean royal winter palaces complex west of Jericho, is one of the oldest known synagogues that have ever been found. It dates from between 70 and 50 BCE, and was built as part of a Hasmonean royal winter palace complex in the warm desert oasis of Jericho.</p><br>
<p>The synagogue was discovered by a dig led by Ehud Netzer.</p><br>
<p>The synagogue was a modest building of stone and sun-baked brick. It included a ritual bath and a small courtyard surrounded by seven or eight rooms with a rectangular main hall measuring 53 by 37 feet. The hall was bordered by a colonnade the platform of which was nearly two feet above the floor of the nave. This provided seating for nearly 70 people. In the northeastern corner, Netzer found a niche that may have served as a Torah Ark. A lower compartment, mostly intact, is thought to have possibly functioned as a genizah or storage compartment where old or unused scrolls were stored. Adjacent to the western side of the main hall was a triclinium, or dining hall, where public meals could be held, and a small, triangular space that may have been used as a kitchen. The triclinium was added some years after the main hall was built. Diners reclined, Roman style, on benches against three walls of the chamber while eating. The floors and walls were covered with white plaster.</p><br>
<h2>Controversy</h2><br>
<p>Despite the excavator&#39;s identification of a building among the Hasmonean palatial complex near Wadi Qelt as a synagogue, the matter is far from conclusive. In fact, few scholars seriously consider this suggestion in discussions of Second Temple period synagogues, though even fewer have openly challenged the identification in print.</p><br>
<p>The Hatteras Weather Bureau Station is a wood-frame building in Hatteras, North Carolina built in 1901 for what was then called the USA Weather Bureau. The then-remote location on the Outer Banks of North Carolina provided data on conditions in the Atlantic Ocean from a fixed location that was farther into the ocean environment than any on the Atlantic coast. The building served as a weather station from 1902 to 1946, when it was converted to living quarters for Weather Bureau personnel. In 1952 the property was turned over to the USA Coast Guard, which used it until 1958, when it was transferred to the National Park Service for use by Cape Hatteras National Seashore. From 1958 to 1976 the building was used as a research station, first by Duke University and later by North Carolina State University for investigations concerning marine invertebrates.</p><br>
<p>It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.</p><br>
<p>Mount Benacantil is a mount  that dominates the urban part of Alicante, and is the characteristic image of the city. The mount name appears as Banu-l-Qatil in the work of Muslim geographer Al-Idrisi in the 12th century, but it is possible that this is an error of transcription  because it does not make a lot of sense in Arabic . Compared with other names in Valencian Community, the mount name is more likely to be derived from the word "benna", Arabic transcription of "pinna", which is "rock" in Latin; combined with the adjective "laqanti", which comes from "Laqant," the Arabic name of the city. Therefore, we obtain a half Roman, half Arabic toponym, "Benna Laqanti".</p><br>
<p>The rock mount is covered by pine trees and bushes on the north side, while on the south side, which overlooks the Mediterranean Sea, there are only rocks. In the intermediate areas there are bushes and grasses that are quite characteristic for the dry Mediterranean climate.</p><br>
<p>The mount is famous for the rock formation on its south-western slope, known as la cara del moro ("the moor&#39;s face").</p><br>
<p>The medieval fortress of Alicante, the Castle of Santa Bárbara stands on the top of the mount. On the slopes of the mount there are Park Ereta, neighborhoods of Santa Cruz, San Roque, San Anton and Raval Roig, and antique apartments. In recent years it became a botellón place.</p><br>
<p>Avenida Jaime II, which is a continuation of Avenida de Alfonso el Sabio, crosses the northern foot of the mount, and so does a tunnel of Alicante Tram.</p><br>
<p>Bryn Arw is a hill in the Black Mountains of the Brecon Beacons National Park in Monmouthshire, south Wales. It lies 4 km north of the town of Abergavenny and 1.5 miles west of the village of Llanvihangel Crucorney. Its summit at 384m  above sea level is the more northerly of two tops which lie on the crest of a slightly arcuate north-south ridge which drops away to the south at first gently and then sharply. The hill is isolated from the main mass of the range by the valleys of Cwm Coed-y-cerig to the north and by Cwm Brynarw to the west. It is a Marilyn.</p><br>
<h2>Geology</h2><br>
<p>The hill is composed from mudstones and sandstones of the Senni Beds Formation of the Old Red Sandstone laid down during the Devonian period. A number of small fossil landslips can be seen around its flanks, notably at its northwestern and southwestern points where the slopes are steepest.</p><br>
<h2>Access</h2><br>
<p>The hill is designated as open country so freely accessible to walkers. Public footpaths run around its base for all but a short section of its western flank whilst further paths link from the nearby road network.</p><br>
<p>Gaer is the name of a hill in the Black Mountains of the Brecon Beacons National Park in Monmouthshire, south Wales. It lies at the southern end of the long ridge between the valley of the Grwyne Fawr and the Vale of Ewyas one mile to the north of Bryn Arw and 3 miles northeast of Sugarloaf. Its summit at 427m above sea level sits within an Iron Age hillfort known as Twyn y Gaer.</p><br>
<h2>Geology</h2><br>
<p>The mass of the hill is formed from the mudstones and sandstones of the Senni Beds formation whilst the upper slopes are formed from the sandstones of the overlying Brownstones Formation. Both are assigned to the Old Red Sandstone which was laid down during the Devonian period. The southern slopes around Coed y Cerrig have been the subject of substantial landslipping in the past.</p><br>
<h2>Access</h2><br>
<p>The upper part of the hill is designated as open country so freely accessible to walkers. Several public footpaths and unmetalled roads (green lanes) weave their way around the lower slopes making the hill readily accessible.</p><br>
<p>Mynydd Troed is a hill in the Black Mountains of the Brecon Beacons National Park in Powys, south Wales. Its name literally translates to "Foot Mountain," based how it appears when viewed from the Allt Mawr ridge.</p><br>
<p>It lies 3 miles south of Talgarth and 2 miles northeast of the village of Llangors on the western side of the range. Its summit at the northern end of a northwest to southeast aligned ridge reaches 609m above sea level and is crowned by a trig point.</p><br>
<h2>Geology</h2><br>
<p>The base of the hill is formed from mudstones of the St Maughans Formation whilst the upper part is formed from the sandstones and mudstones of the Senni Beds Formation, both of which are assigned to the Old Red Sandstone laid down during the Devonian period. A few old landslides scar its slopes, a couple of which are seen to advantage from Castell Dinas and the ridge of Y Grib to the east. A number of small quarries have been worked on its slopes in the past.</p><br>
<h2>Access</h2><br>
<p>Other than its lower slopes, the hill is designated as open country and therefore freely accessible to walkers. The most popular routes of ascent are from Pengenffordd on the A479 to the northeast and from the col over which the minor road up Cwm Sorgwm goes towards Llangors. A bridleway and a restricted byway run around the foot of the hill to the north and west.</p><br>
